Speaker 1:

This has been a journey of almost three years podcasting, so I'm super excited and I wanted to just share a little episode about something that's been inspiring me lately and I hope that it resonates with you, because I think you know, we're all busy doing our own thing and sometimes something that's going on in the media or something that's going on in the world can really help inspire you to keep going on your journey. And I am obviously recording this. It's the summer of 2024. And the Summer Olympics are going to be taking place at the end of July in Paris, and I, for one, have been tuning in and watching a lot of the replays of the Olympic trials and I just find it so inspiring when they take moments and they interview some of the people and you hear how many times they've tried and you see how many world records are trying to be and you just see the passion in these people's eyes and the desire of you know, wanting to be better, wanting to strive for more, wanting to be a gold medalist, and I just thought there was so many like inspiration and motivation and just positivity that can come from looking at the Olympics. You know if you're on a health journey, so I'm kind of just going to like break this up into like my thoughts I jotted down while I was kind of watching this and kind of how it could correlate or help motivate you in your health journey, weight loss journey, whatever kind of journey that you're on that you are looking to better yourself in.

Speaker 1:

And the first thing is all about preparation, right? Is that starting point? Looking at all the Olympians, they all started somewhere right, like maybe it was when they were a child and they started swimming, maybe it was in their 20s they decided that they wanted to go for gold, you know. So, no matter where you are in your journey, we all whether you're an Olympic athlete or you're just a mom trying to do the best that you can we all start somewhere right, and that's just a good reminder that your journey doesn't need to be compared to anyone else's and where you start is where you start. It's always your journey and I think, hearing a lot of the Olympian stories and hearing you know some, like I said, had aspirations from when they were very small children at like six years old and some that didn't really start, you know, even training for the Olympics until like in their 20s, 30s. There's all kinds of stories, you know, you can hear if you just really look for them, and it does inspire you to say like no matter how old I am, no matter what my circumstances are, I can start now. It doesn't matter what the past has done, what it looked like, it doesn't matter. This can be my starting point. So kind of like preparing, starting, just realizing that to be an Olympian obviously takes discipline, it takes consistency, it takes goal setting, just like a health and weight loss journey, right Like consistency is key.

Speaker 1:

I think if you actually sat down with all these Olympians, the one thing that they probably would all have in common is they stayed consistent, working towards their goals. Maybe it didn't happen as fast as they wanted, maybe it took a lot longer and it took a lot of trial and error and it took a lot of failures, but this is what got them. You know there, the little tiny goals over time, the putting in the work after day gets them to where they want to be, and you know that's obviously the Olympics and going for a medal and all of those things and maybe for you it's obviously not a gold medal, but it's maybe fitting into your pants and feeling confident. Maybe it's going to the doctor and having all kinds of great lab numbers, maybe it's just feeling like you have energy at two o'clock in the afternoon, right? Just remembering that we all start somewhere. We all have to prepare, we all have to go through some of the trials and tribulations, no matter what our goals are. That this is normal, whether you're like an Olympian or not, right? So just a reminder that we all have a starting point, right? The next thing that it kind of reminds me of and I heard this story after story of hearing a lot of the people with their training.

Speaker 1:

So, depending upon where you are and what you're looking to do, it's just really looking to be consistent with some type of training, whether it's just making sure you go to bed at nine o'clock at night or 10 o'clock at night so that you get consistent sleep. Maybe that's what you're training for good sleep. If you're training to run a half marathon or a 5k, it's. What does that look like? Are you putting a map out there to reach your goal? You know athletes, obviously they have coaches, they have trainers and they have goals that they're working on. They have a training process. They have this consistent training day after day, week after week, and that's going to keep them motivated. That's going to keep them on track. That's going to keep their healthy habits moving them forward. Keep them motivated. That's going to keep them on track. That's going to keep their healthy habits moving them forward.

Speaker 1:

So I believe that, as busy moms you know, we're all doing this every day with other things. But are we being regimented about our own health goals? Are we looking at it like it's a training process? And, like I said, it could literally be just that you want energy at two o'clock, like what are you doing? What's your training for that look like? You know, what kind of game plan are we putting in place to make sure that we feel energized at two o'clock, to make sure that we're getting enough sleep, that we're fueling our bodies in a good, positive way? You know the athletes really strategize and really hone in on what that looks like. What that map looks like could be something that maybe we forget about because we're so busy being organized and regimented with everything else we have to do with our kids schedules, with our job schedules, with trying to make time for your husband, all these things, and if you don't really strategize your own health and wellness journey, it can just easily go to the wayside. So I think another thing, just a reminder, like I said, not that we're Olympic athletes, but having a training process or some type of system strategy in place for where you want to go is important.

Speaker 1:

Um, so another thing that I saw consistent when I was watching a lot of these Olympics, like whether it's the trials for swimming, diving, gymnastics, track and field, all the things that didn't make it, but that other sister was in her corner cheering her on, and this year they're both going to go to Paris. So, having parents that support you, having a coach, having a trainer, having friends and family all around you or someone that can help you reach your goal, these people all have support systems. They have teammates. In some cases, you know, they have coaches, trainers, all kinds of people in their corner helping them reach their goal, and it really speaks to that thing where we're not just alone in this journey. Like, I want to be here for anybody that's willing to, you know, reach out to me.

Speaker 1:

I think we all have, whether it's a Facebook community. Whether it's the baseball moms, whether it's you know women at the bus stop, whatever it is, you can find a community of people that are willing to get in your corner and help support you on your health journey. You just have to be vocal about it. Obviously, these Olympic athletes aren't sitting at home saying I want to be an Olympic athlete and not doing anything or not sharing that with people that can help them get to their goal. And I think there's no better like visualization as the Olympics. When you look at, every single athlete has a coach. Every single athlete has someone in their corner that's helping them get to that goal, that's helping them map out their journey, that's helping them get through the struggles, that's helping them through the failures. They all have tremendous support systems and there's just no better parallel than the Olympics to see that, because not one person is doing it alone. Not one person has no backing. They're all there and they have a tremendous support system.

Speaker 1:

So, really looking to find outside the box resources for that, if you don't have the positivity within your family, if you don't have it with your spouse, there is always a way to find a group that will have your back. You don't have it with your spouse, there is always a way to find a group that will have your back. It doesn't have to be relatives, it doesn't have to be somebody that you know. Sometimes, in some cases, it's better that it's not, you know, because there's judgment and there's past history and there's just people that are too close sometimes. So, really looking for that outside support that can help you get to whatever your goals are.

Speaker 1:

Another thing that I noticed is and you know, you've heard this time and time again like athletes get injured. Athletes, you know, have issues like whether it's mental health issues or whether it's like a physical issue. Or I saw one of the track and field. There was like a false start and the person was disqualified and that's devastating, right, like absolutely devastating. You worked so hard and you had this huge setback and what I kind of noticed from a lot of these stories that were being played and what you're hearing and kind of what you see play out, even in the media, sometimes with some of the Olympians, is that it's really it defines you as a person, with how you handle these setbacks, right, like how you overcome these challenges in your journey, because at some point they probably have all had an injury they had to overcome. They probably had some type of. Maybe it was a false start, maybe it was just like something in their personal lives that affected them, getting into the mental game again. Maybe it was a mental health issue, things that have happened that they've had to overcome, that they had to work through and you know, for them it's in the spotlight a lot of times and for us we have the luxury of not having that.

Speaker 1:

But we will all have some type of setback. We will face adversity in our lives, but it doesn't mean that we should just throw in the towel on our health and wellness. So it's really saying, ok, this is a situation, this is where I'm at, but how am I going to get past that? How am I going to handle this setback? What kind of mental, you know things am I going to do to help me get past this hurdle? Whether it's maybe getting a therapist, maybe it's confiding in your spouse, maybe it's just reaching out to that person and sharing. Maybe it's going to physical therapy if you have an injury, maybe it's looking for a coach. Whatever it is for you that is setting you back. It's really how we handle the setback, as opposed to the actual setback, because in real life we've all had hard days, right, we've all had issues, we've had trials, tribulations, all those things.

Speaker 1:

But I really respect the athletes that are able to come forward with their challenges and they're able to, you know, share it in hopes to help other people, and I really think it's how they're handling that and they're coming back stronger and better than ever in a lot of cases. And I think that really speaks to you know the mom journey too. We are all in this. You know fast-paced world kids needing so much from us, jobs demanding more and more. You know finding time paced world kids needing so much from us, jobs demanding more and more. You know finding time for a spouse and have a healthy, happy marriage, all of these things. And then something could come in and upset that and it's like, well, you're the last thing on the list, but instead it's really looking at that as like how can I put myself first that I'm in the best headspace, that when these setbacks do happen, I can face them head on, I know how to handle them, I know I can move past it and you're going to be stronger for that. And I think in a lot of cases we see that the athletes are actually stronger after overcoming something.

Speaker 1:

Another thing that I've noticed is, you know, obviously, being an Olympic athlete, you are going after those medals, especially the gold right, and they just celebrate those milestones with such joy. That is obviously the end goal of what they're trying to reach for. It's what they've been like dreaming of all their lives and they're taking those moments to actually acknowledge all of their milestones, all of the progress, all of the hard work and even if they have a setback, they're still acknowledging, like maybe they didn't get the gold, but maybe they got silver, and they're just acknowledging and so proud and they just exude the celebratory time in that, instead of just like kind of beating ourselves up, which is what I think a lot of us do, we do as a lot like moms. In a lot of cases, if we don't reach the pinnacle of what we dreamed of, like if we don't lose 10 pounds but we lose eight, we're kind of like, oh, I just wish we lose last two pounds and we focus on the negative sometimes. But I feel like they are really about being their personal best, about achieving the small goals, celebrating those wins, and you know I've talked about this on a lot of the podcasts before, but it's really focusing on the small wins and sometimes for these Olympians it's just the journey of actually qualifying for the Olympics. Sometimes it's going to the Olympics and just having that experience and knowing that now that you've been there, you know how to come back next time stronger and get that medal. You know celebrating those milestones along the way and not getting upset if you don't reach exactly what you wanted, but recognizing all the hard work and progress that we've put in all along the way, like all those workouts, all those steps, all those nights of good sleep, all the things that you're doing to work hard on yourself. We need to take a second and acknowledge them. We're always acknowledging things for others, but we're not really good at acknowledging them for ourselves and giving ourselves a pat on the back.

Speaker 1:

Another thing that I noticed is typically what it seems like when they're being interviewed. But you hear their stories. They are like focused on obviously getting to this step, but they have a longer term vision of everything that they want. Right, they're looking at like these are just small steps that are going to get me to a journey, but they're not just like this is all I want and then I'm done. They're always reaching for more. They're always striving to be better, they're always striving for the best version of themselves.

Speaker 1:

It seems like and I think that's just a nice reminder that it's okay to be a visionary, it's okay to dream big, it's okay, it's awesome to want to be you know, fitting into your jeans, fitting confident or feeling confident, having energy at three o'clock in the afternoon it's amazing to want all those things and we should want those things. But too often we go through the motions of life, just dealing with feeling fatigued, feeling like garbage, gaining weight, not understanding why, and we don't take a second to say, hey, what was my goal and what were the steps that I was taking to get there. Instead of just going through the motions, they are really focused on health and wellness being a lifelong journey, really focused on health and wellness being a lifelong journey, not a sprint, but the marathon to the end, and how they can enhance their journey, how they can make it better, how they can enhance their physical attributes, how they can enhance their training, how they can enhance feeling better, having more energy, striving for all of those things that we all want but we often forget about. So I think, looking towards that long term vision and being okay to dream and being okay to say like it's great if I don't get to the end end goal, but I'm going to work my butt off to try to get there, because I know at the end it feels so good, and I mean, for the most part that was kind of the notes I took, things that were were inspiring to me, just kind of things I noted. But I hope that you know, in some capacity you can tune in to the Olympics and find inspiration from something, find motivation from someone's story, from a certain sport Maybe it's. You want to get involved in running and the marathon runners just astonish you with how fast they are and it just blows your mind and you want to just like say you know what, I'm never going to be an Olympic athlete, but darn it, I want to run a race this year. That's great, right, like it doesn't have to be to be an Olympic athlete and that's not what I'm saying. I'm not going to be an Olympic athlete, I have no intention of it, but I think it's an amazing goal if you have that right. But for us moms just literally trying to better ourselves, I think it's okay to dream, it's okay to want more, it's okay to feel good, and we shouldn't feel guilty about it. I've spoke about that a lot and I truly believe that we all deserve to feel good, and sometimes it's just about taking that time to really research and figure out what is it that makes us feel good and what makes us feel like garbage, and really focusing on that. But, all in all, I hope you guys can watch the Olympics, find something in there that inspires you and use that as a motivator. Use it as a tool to just remind yourself that this person started somewhere too. They came out of the womb and didn't know how to walk, just like you. Honestly, like we really think about it, we all kind of start the same way. Some people just do more with it than others, right? So just a reminder anything is possible. You can do this and everyone starts somewhere.

Speaker 1:
